(Same concept as the cooking show, just without the cooking. And with the writing.) This time the secret ingredient was finding a different common interest for the Fashion Club. First thing in was chess, and the replies were many and varied from there.
I didn't actually write anything for it, but someone else, in reflection of the contest, reffed (and recced!) my fic. On the grounds that the easiest way to tinker with the FC is to change the membership. First, I'm surprised that I was cited as the example, and second, I'm surprised that these people LIKE it as much as they do.
I mean, don't get me wrong, I like that one. Think it's one of my better Dariafics. But, but, when the people egging me on are bloody brilliant in their own right, it gets kinda... kinda... eep. ::dives for table::*
I did have a continuation of it, but I scrapped that (no idea which notebook of my many thousands it's in, either). And Miranda's been rather at odds with Dariafic since I managed to get the crossover done. So I don't know if it's possible. The thing's over a year old as it is...
Actually, the guy praising this thing beta'd Slight Return for me - said he didn't understand the story completely having not read GO, but he thought I wrote very well. (And he apparently didn't know I was behind the story I've been talking about the rest of the time. Weird.)
Then again, if there's actual... like... demand for it, I guess I could try and write something. Would have to get back in the mindset though.
eep.

*The table is a looong-standing board joke. May have started at the Outpost Daria board, which hasn't existed for... three years this July, so, yeah, a while. I think Canadibrit had sole rights to it for a while, but then she disappeared and I borrowed the thing. It's to hide under when you're getting a bunch of compliments.

30 March 2K3

Am back.
GO/AG crossover ficlet: Storm. She's insisted on picking up a name that I'd originally only had in as a minor cameo from someone's NaNoWriMo story. I'll probably wind up changing the last name slightly.
That new link over yonder? It's pretty cool. They have little writing challenge things, just to get a scene of something out, every day. Sunday is the official Talk To a Character Day. So I wrote up an argument with the semi-villain from the comic book thing. I might retrieve it and paste it here. There was another one about belief systems, and while I may have misinterpreted it slightly, it gave me a *lot* of background on Azrael. Pretty neat little plot device generator thingy. A good one from here that I may have to use yet:
A map of North America, dated 1994. The political boundaries are slightly different, but most significantly, the major cities are very different. (That's my one problem with the musical one-act. Too bloody preachy. They all "see the light" in about five minutes of the time they start talking about their messed-up lives. Life doesn't work like that. And I *know* it's unlikely to get a "moral message" out of Attack of the Killer Furbies, but you never know...)
*Do the casting for the people who deserve it. Not just because their seniors, not just because it's the kid's first time out and not getting a part might crush their gentle spirit, not just because they only walk onstage in a Dutch-boy outfit for the class one-act. (Which is actually quite funny, watching all those seniors act like five-year-olds, and there's no Dutch-boy outfit yet, but I digress.) Understudies included in this thought.
*The understudies WILL KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!! They will be at as many rehearsals as the actors are required to be at - ideally all, but there's a buffer space of three practices in case something comes up. They will watch when they're not acting and do it themselves, at each practice. (This is most of the point from the argument this afternoon.) Oh, and they won't be expected to learn two major parts, if I can help it.

15 November 2K2

Opened beta-er volunteering this afternoon, after a bit of marathon type-copy-paste-HTML last night to get the last few scenes up.
Random note: Xiphoid Process would make a great character name. Probably, but nothing definite at the moment (on that front, anyway).
Theological debate of the story (as introduced in the rehashing): "If I say there's no God, do I lose my job?" Any guesses as to which, find some way to get them to me.)

22 September 2K2

Trying to combine the music-inspired idea from last night with a sentence that's been floating around my head for a few days. For those who aren't satisfied, a few explanations of the above:
*Yes, that first does mean Crowley is in. One-sided phone conversation. And yes, I pulled a cassette gimmck (why not?).
*The CAPS-speak is along the same lines as the radio/TV thing. Those with the book should be able to figure out what that means. Those without the book should locate a copy as soon as possible.
*I hit on the CHOW(tm) bit the other night, but only just (and I do mean *just*) made it official. "Umfood" has long been a saying-of-note in Dariafic (as with several other things, it's all Canadibrit's fault, or at least that of her continuum). I was going to write that in reference to the cafeteria food, and "unfood" popped into my head. That having been used in the Good Omens Burger Lord scene, I thought it was more fitting. And on top of that, it gave me a lead-in for later on.
As for what's about to happen... all I can really say is I think something big's gonna go down at Pizza King/Prince/Whatever. After a scene or so more, as the only fighting in Quinn's presence has been two-thirds of the Js. (Read my character comparisons if you want a vague idea of where the other third is.)
I've got everything typed except for the couple of bits I just wrote, if you're wondering.

random note: I was browsing Sick, Sad World (it's a Daria fansite) for no particular reason last night and cam across a now-interesting alter-ego picture of Quinn. Maybe she joined the Chattering Order? (It's the last one on the page...)

7 September 2K2

I meant to say something last time, but forgot it. Sit down for the next part:
This one's a crossover. A Daria/Good Omens crossover, to be exact. In other words, something that might only have a one-person audience, but I'll prolly write it anyway. XD
Don't know why I didn't realize it till today, seeing as I first put the characters together a couple days ago. Probably something to do with the recent sleep dep.
ANYway. It concerns what might've happened to those three Horsepersons after the end of the book (I'd say what happened there, but I'd rather YOU go read it). For some reason, whatever superiors they may have send them to Lawndale, but they can't *possibly* just be there as themselves. No way. It wouldn't be as cool!
The random character connections go as follows.
War: Quinn Morgendorffer - She's the only female redhead on the show with a name, and she likes having guys fight over her.
Famine: Trent Lane - The band's always hungry, there's *never* food in Casa Lane, and if memory serves Monique is fairly twiglike.
Pollution: Jamie White - ...Well, he's got the last name for the job. (This is prolly the biggest stretch on the list. I'm sure I'll think of something better, at least so far as reasons go. I finally decided to enter one. The secret ingredients: the word "transmogrified" and cooking.
Results below. Untitled as of yet, but I may do so the send it to Lawndale Leftovers.

"Da-A-ria! Why are you filling the teapot? We only need two cups of water!"
"Quinn, two cups water boiled is drastically different from two cups boiling water."
"Oh. Steam, right?"
"Exactly." That debate settled, Daria sat down at the table and opened the Calvin and Hobbes book Jane had lent her. Quinn read the rest of the Jello instructions, and dug a saucepan out of the cabinet before sitting down herself.
"I was reading some of that earlier. It's weird."
"A six-year-old kid who talks to a stuffed tiger? Of course it's weird. I think that's why it was so popular." She smirked at a joke in one of the comics.
"No, not just that part. His cardboard box. How much stuff does he *do* with that thing, anyway?"
"Possibly too much."
"Anyway, I was reading one where he had it as a... trans-something. It was upside down. Transcontinentalizer?"
"Transmogrifier. I got to that part sometime yesterday. Assuming you mean after the duplicator experiment."
"I think so. He had the clones under it, and trans... what's the word again? Transmongreled?"
"Transmogrified."
"Yeah, that's the word. Anyway, he turned them into worms and buried them outside." A pause for thought, then: "That kid has one messed-up imagination."
"I don't know," Daria mused, "I've seen worse in my time. Like the one that put Tiffany in a social-skills counseling position."
The teapot chose that moment to sound off.
"She was trying to help other people," Quinn pointed out.
"At a speed of roughly three words a minute. The most social skills anyone could get out of that would be to finish everyone's sentences for them."

Jello thing based on one of my mother's spats with her stepmother. Calvin and Hobbes because I knew I'd get the word in.

21 August 2K2

Miranda is currently occupied with "Asphyxiation By Ivy" (of all things! Amongst other things.
The version of "I Don't" I eventually came up with bears little resemblance to the one on the actual show, which I just watched. Kept my history notes and church history textbook, on the grounds that they may be useful for any future Horsepersons plotlines. Not the Good Omens fic that I've been ranting abowt.
It's a Good Omens ficlet concerning half of the Apocalyptic Horsepersons, set sometime during all the Manhattan Project fuss (though you don't hear that officially till the end). Wrote it starting somewhere in Tennessee, and had it finished by the time we got to Atlanta.
I don't have time to post it right now. Look for it sometime this week though, prolly (for lack of anywhere better) on Galactic Cynic.
(Speaking of which, I'm not planning on a layout change just yet. I've got an idea that considering my lack of any graphics-making programs whatsoever could hinder a bit. (No, really. The only reason I ever published Fit the Second was because Douglas Adams died...)
That thing's been in a most non-triumphant quagmire for well over a year now, and I think I finally found a way out of it. Outer-space restaurants and explanations abound. (Including a bad pun only those who've heard "Deteriorata" will truly understand, though other people might find it funny. 'Sides, I just *have* to use it.)
The first two Fits, for any and all interested parties, can be found in varying places: Outpost Daria, smack at the bottom of the C-by-titles page or somewhere near the beginning of the Series listings, and at PRSB Central, for those who want to brave Angelfire.

(Oh, and that possible Good Omens fic has been wallowing as of late, but I've got a lovely little scene in my head involving Crowley's cassette issues with his car, so I'll prolly continue. Found a little (well, big actually) gem called You Only Hurt... by crusading_saint. They're both from songs, a shorter version of the first one is in fact the album title, and I think the second was a tribute-album title, if I remember my liner notes from Disc One correctly.
Being from songs is important for this particular project.
I haven't doubled up titles on a project in a while - quite possibly not since "Absentee" - but I may have to on this one. Somehow that was enough to shut off the computer but none of the digital clocks or the lights...
No writing of note lately, hence the lack of posts over yonder at Any Side's Up. BUT! Never fear, I've been doing something. Fanart, namely.
*Attempted Sunglasses: Actually did this one before we left Austin, but didn't add it to the Great Artwork Collection. My one problem with drawing glasses of any sort is making the lens-holding bits look like they were possibly made by the same company. And since I wanted to try and draw Crowley, I was gonna need at least a little practice. (That reminds me, I forgot to take my drawing of Daria's glasses on vacation...)
*Movie Poster Fun: Hey, they're actually working on Good Omens as a movie, so why *shouldn't* I draw my own poster? Features The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter. And I just wrote "coming soon" at the bottom, since the only date on the project is next year (prolly next summer).
(Note for those who haven't read Good Omens: "Nice" as it is in the book's title probably doesn't mean what you think it does.)
And finally... drumroll, please...
*Crowley! And it doesn't look like crap! I drew a picture of a guy and he doesn't look like crap! (No, really. This is a *big* achievement for me.) I didn't wind up using the same variety of shades I drew for "Attempted Sunglasses", but they do at least look like they may be of one company's stock. And I already posted all my ramblings on this subject at Dust and Fundamentalists - maybe I'll transplant them later. We shall see.

In other news, an older idea that I don't think ever saw the Current Projects page (though I did mention it here) is trying to come back on me. But I don't know that I'll do anything with it. It all depends on how cray Miranda drives me with it...
...Dude. I need to stop listening to all this 80's music! The blasted artwork is up! There's one I can't possibly have told you people about ahead of time, because I did it on one plane, during the layover, and then on the other plane. You'll know it when you get there, I'm sure.
In other news, I have a story idea (besides "Any Side's Up" which is running smoothly) that I haven't put on the In-Progress page yet. (A) I can't think of a title and (2) I don't really have any place set aside for non-Dariafic, unless it's Hitchhiker's stuff, which this isn't. "This" is proof of how quickly Miranda picks up on things I read. It's the seeds of a Good Omens fic - more about that at The Cliffs. Throw a chaos goddess into the mix and see what happens! Seems like the perfect amount of insanity for one of my plots.) I'll start writing it if I can think up more along that vein... or if I need a break from the Great Crazy Project. Whichever comes first. Did it last summer at the daycare center I got my service hours at, and had to fold it to get it home, but it's otherwise unharmed.
*Squeegee Monster: The Forgotten Muppet. Another daycare drawing, but exactly what it sounds like and not really meant to be a fanart for anybody.
*Something I did when I was about ten - a friend and I drew some stuff to send in for the newspaper's kids section, and we each kept our best of three. The one I kept is a scuba-diver chick. The one that got in the paper(!) was a pioneer-ish setting, and I don't remember what the third one was.
My sister wants photos from old vacations to scan in, and while I understand that she wants "good" photos, the only ones I've taken, really, were (a) on trips when I was about eight and (b) taken weith an extremely sucky camera. So:
*A bridge/overpass thing somewhere in the vicinity of San Francisco with rainbows painted on the bit where cars go through . Taken through a tinted car window but doesn't look it as much as my Golden Gate Bridge pics.
*Clump of ferns in one of the redwood parks, from the same vacation. Dad's hand somehow wound up in the middle of the picture and it therefore looks like it goes on a Michaelangelo ceiling. (As mentioned, except for Quinn the fire faerie. Don't think I even finished outlining her...)
WHAT I'M TAKING:
*Fanart for one of my own fics. Go figure. If you've read Jesse's Girl, it's Jane's instant-art canvas. If you haven't read it, go do so and the joke will explain itself.
*Quinn in an outfit from the foldout for Aqua's second album (I don;t know the chick's name offhand - guess I'll have to look it up), complete with pink hair. XD That *is*, of course, why I did it.
*A picture I drew for last year's literary magazine (at school) of a girl reading... something... while on a couch. Kinda looks like Quinn, but it had to be black-and-white, so it's not necessarily Quinn. And he only copy of said drawing I've got is in said literary magazine.
*Can't decide whether I should bring my Brittany-as-Ace (the Doctor Who chick, well, one of them) makeover. But I've got at least one Andrea makeover that's definitely in. Morticia Addams. Oh yeah. And maybe the Marvin (yes, the Paranoid Andriod) one, but I'm not sure on that.
*Quinn and one of those static-electricity globes you find at science museums. Can you say "big hair"? I thought so.
*Jane with a camera and an almost suspicious smirk... this is an early one too.
*A Daria-style reaction to "Video Killed the Radio Star", complete with the lyrics written in behind it. And a Real Life (TM)-style close-up of the same thing. If we ever start that group blog, I'll be lobbying for a layout with the close-up. It's the better of the two.
*Once again, me doing my own fanart, just these are for "Any Side's Up" and not Dariafic. If anyone wants to see a picture of the guy, you're on your own. /me does not draw guys well at all.
If I had my "Romeo and Juliet's Day Off" poster back, it'd be coming along too.
Oh, and the "Video" close-up chick may or may not become a character in "Any Side's Up". She looks too cool to be the villain-ish character, I know that much. But lately she seems to have been insisting on entry into the story. Now if I can work out a name...

9 June 2K2

You can all gasp now. I started the third blog. I'll be taking my sketchbook along anyway in case Miranda has a random fit of (fan?)art inspiration, but it'll be way cool if I can actually get some artwork online. I'd have sent you to the source long ago, except the source is buried within a much bigger tale of behind the fanfics. So I changed the line to a BNL lyric-snippet. This'll be entered in Quoteage! as soon as I can get myself to add to it again. But right now, that requires movement. I'll pass. :b
Liana's character description is done. ::masses rejoice:: Jane needs a last name - I already said it's not Lane, and I'm sticking by that. The title of the whole project is "Any Side's Up", which has nothing to do with comic books but I think it sounds cool. And the first... thing is definitely going to be called "Comic Role", if that makes y'all feel better.
Another part of the serious help is honest-to-Bob character descriptions. I only had two in my head originally, and then Jane (not Lane!) worked her way in there, and no story is complete without a character you want to slap. There's another one besides that lurking somewhere, I think. Eh, they have a tendency to be Miranda's friends from somewhere anyway... ask Alex about that one. (The previous fanfic plug really had nothing to do with anything -- The Management.)
I'm considering putting *this* handy project into its own blog. I know, I know, last time I said that you never saw the final result. There *was* no final result there, but this one's just too darn good to bail out on.
Once I get character descriptions up, if someone out there wants to do art for them, feel free but please let me know where I can find the end product. I've already done pictures of Jane and Liana (Liana's the main character), but it's a case of Scanner-Deficit Disorder. You'd think since Dad's so keen on putting stuff in the computer we'd have one by now, but nooo, we need to eat and make the car go and other unimportant stuff like that. {/sarcasm}

5 June 2K2

Even with the song in question, this story needs some *serious* help. It's a first. Miranda actually *told* me where she disappeared to. (She's prolly there now, of course, but she's offering information.)
This might turn into a semi-Hitchhiker's fanfic. Wrote a little something that only mentions one name earlier, and will be expanding on it:

"Guys..."
Ping, ping, ping-ping-ping.
"*Guys...*"
Ping-ping-ping, ping-ping-ping, ping-ping-ping, ping, ping.
"Guys!"
Ping-pi-
"Look, you're driving me bat's dos with that thing. Quite an achievement."
"Hey... this is a banner day! We just about drove Zaphod Beeblebrox bat-shit!"
"I think that merits a Bloody Loony."

You're wondering a few things after that, I can tell.
First, the pings. They're supposed to sound like a Geiger counter going off, except this isn't a Geiger counter. Miranda hasn't divulged that particular piece of information yet. The first set of pings wound up being "one two cha-cha-cha" - don't ask me how, all right? ^_^ The second is the first bit of the William Tell Overture. Tap it out on a desk and it'll make sense. The one that gets cut off, obviously, is continuing the William Tell theme.
And a Bloody Loony is my contribution to the drinking world. Eventually. After I'm old enough to throw in random types of alcohol and see what happens. For the minor-safe version, I'm thinking grenadine (cherry flavoring stuff) and orange soda, but I haven't had a chance to try that yet.
As for how I know it's Miranda, I was expanding the sentence in my head last night - remember that "sleep on it" thing? (Yeah, one of those.) After the sentence the first thing I got was:
"Miranda and Leanne glanced at each other..."
(Leanne, of course, is the same one as the "Asphyxiation By Ivy" character. I might replace her with a classmate who's actually not in school a whole lot. ^_^)

19 May 2K2

I've got another completely random sentence that I can't get out of my head.
"Look, you're driving me bat's dos with that thing. You have to send to at least one to get credit (as such), and I plan on sending to three. Increases the chance of publication, if nothing else.
The Poems So Far:
"Cosmically Speaking..." - to which there is a link in my previous post. And by the by, the formatting is kinda wonky on it. To see it properly put it in Word or notepad or whatever, take out the return lines, and put one tab-key before "The Universe" and two before "Everything?".
"Suspended Reality" - this is the one that actually *incorporates* Hitchhiker's quotes, instead of just putting one at the top. Hey, we had to write about a "sacred" place... It's also unique in being the only one of the three that I actually wrote for class.
"God Save the Queen" (that may or may not be the title) - no, it's not to do with Hitchhiker's stuff this time. The first stanza is comparable to Daria character Sandi's status. I just don't use her name is all. In the second stanza, it's bye-bye popularity time. Repeated theme is "Queen of the Popular Crowd", hence my only title idea.
I think all the places I'm submitting to also accept short stories. If the poems go over well, maybe I'll try sending out "Elvis Works Here" or something.
Gyah. The one time I actually want a quote from The Story of D, I can't find it. (It's the one about "'but we look forward to rejecting you in the future'", for those who might know what I'm talking about.)

(edit: yeah, I was stupid and didn't know what day I was posting this. Karate (which I'd be at now except Dad didn't want to go either) and a big storm, which meant no internet until it went away.
So. Where were we?

Ah yes, "Monster". I just might drag Jodie and company's first attempt at film-making into the story as a side note. For no other reason than I can. :b
Up to now, I've been stealing things from episodes I've seen. But it was suggested that I use some of "Gifted" in this leg, and I'm considering it even though I haven't seen that one. Hey, I know where to find scripts!! ^_^
Shades of "Fair Enough" (another one I haven't seen) have been planned for, since that ep contained Quinn's big dramatic debut.

...That's really everything, I think. I saved the beta-ing emails, and that's where most of the suggestions were made, so I can always dig them back up.
Speaking of emails, I got feedback on a two-year-old fanfic! It was originally the head of a series, but the series bit never panned out. This guy liked the story and wanted to know if more was forthcoming. I wrote back and said most likely not, but if it was Quinn-centric stuff he was after, there just might be something lurking in the rest of my stuff.
Feedback either gets me in a mad dash for the table (board joke) or stuck with a minor case of ego-inflation. Either way, I keep all of it.
